How do I find cost structure benchmarks for the tire industry?
Answer
To find the cost structure benchmark, you’ll need to start with one company, for example Goodyear.
- From the Library’s homepage, click on Databases
- Click on All Subjects and change that to Business
- Click on Mergent Online (if you’re off campus, you’ll need to sign in with your myPBA username and password)
- Type the company name in the Company Search box on the left side of the Mergent homepage
- Select the appropriate company from the list that appears
- Then click on the Competitors tab
- Click Public Global
- Click Add All to Company Analysis List
- Click Company Analysis List
- Click the double arrows >> to move all of the companies to the Multiple Company Report box
- In the lower section, click on the plus sign next to Company Financials
- Click on Income Statement
- Click the single arrow > to move the Income Statement to the Report Items box
- In the bottom section, click on Select a format and choose Microsoft Excel format
- Click Create Multiple Company Report
This will give you a report with the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) for the top 25 companies in the Tire Industry. Note, you can add and subtract companies as necessary. Also, this report does not include private companies.
If you would prefer to go company by company, you can do that too. Here are the directions for that:
- Type the company name in the Company Search box on the left side of the Mergent homepage
- Select the appropriate company from the list that appears
- Click on the Company Financials tab
- Click on Balance Sheet and change it to Income Statement
- Click Refresh on the report
- The second item down is the Cost of Goods Sold.
